Thinning hair is just one of the many glamorous perks of getting older. It happens to the best of us, male or female, and for some, it comes earlier than others. It plagues nearly 40-percent of women by the age of 40, according to a study by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. By the age of 60, that number doubles to nearly 80-percent.

Thinning hair and hair loss is a frustrating issue that can stem from a variety of factors. Everything from environmental issues (like stress) to genetic, and product damage can contribute to the problem.

So, what can you do? We spoke with Michelle Blaisure, Certified Trichologist and Bosley Professional Expert, to get some tips on preventing thinning hair and treating the issue.

“While genetics known as female pattern baldness affects about 20% of women with hair loss primarily in the crown and bang area, the majority experience hair loss due to stress and ageing along with changes diet hormonal balance, medications, and health,” explains Blaisure.

First and foremost, taking a dietary supplement designed to target thinning hair is a great way to slow down hair loss and promote regrowth. But that’s not all you should be doing: incorporating hair products is another great way to provide your scalp with the TLC it needs.

BOSLEY BosRevive Volumizing Conditioner For Color-Treated Hair ($49.95)

Blaisure recommends the BosRevive Volumizing Conditioner from Bosley Professional’s Revive line. The color-treated conditioner is designed for people who have started to notice their hair thinning or are experiencing areas of baldness on their scalp. It infuses hair with vitality and gives it volume while smoothing and adding shine for a thicker appearance.

In addition to using hair strengthening products, hair loss sufferers should make the necessary lifestyle changes to stop the issue.

“Reducing stress is the first thing to look at,” advises Blaisure on the best hair care practices. She also recommends getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night and eating a healthy, whole foods diet full of protein and good fats.
