At this point, skipping your morning coffee is not an option. This powerful drink is what gets us through the day, after all…

Despite its important place in our morning routine, dermatologists say that coffee isn’t exactly the best drink for those with acne-prone skin. This is especially the case when you fill your coffee with ingredients that aggravate the skin and disrupt its natural rhythm, causing pimples and breakouts to form.

Curious to know if you’re guilty of having a pore-clogging coffee order? Dermatologist Avnee Shah, M.D. says you do if you put skim milk in your coffee regularly…

Wait, we thought skim milk was supposed to be good for you? Dr. Shah says that the low-calorie milk option is actually very high in sugar, which contributes to its pore-clogging abilities.

"Skim milk actually has much more sugar in it than whole milk," she tells INSIDER"The increased sugars lead to a higher glycemic index. Food with this property are known for flaring acne, so staying away from skim milk should help in part to control these flares."

She's not wrong! Research shows that those who frequently consume added sugars are prone to developing acne and breakouts. One study found that regular added sugar consumers had a 30% greater risk of breaking out, while those who regularly ate pastries and cakes had a 20% greater risk.

So, what should you do instead? Sarika Snell, a dermatologist in Washington D.C. says that breaking up with milk is one of the best ways to finally get rid of your acne--specifically cow's milk.

"Cow milk may contain hormones which also can contribute to acne and inflammation," she explained. "Cutting dairy improves skin texture, skin tone, and acne."

Dr. Shah stresses that clear skin won't just happen overnight, noting that results will probably start to become noticeable after going a month without dairy.

"It takes approximately two to three weeks to see improvement in your skin once you remove dairy from your diet and allow your body to detox from it," she explains.
