Managing type 2 diabetes doesn’t mean you have to give up desserts entirely. While many traditional sweets can spike blood sugar, there are healthier alternatives made with low-glycemic ingredients that can satisfy cravings without the sugar crash. From fiber-rich treats to protein-packed options, these desserts can help stabilize blood sugar levels while still allowing you to indulge.

We spoke with registered dietitian Jesse Feder; Dr. Kevin Huffman, CEO of On the Rocks Climbing Gym; and dietitian Krutika Nanavati to uncover seven delectable treats that people with type 2 diabetes can enjoy daily without worrying about their glucose levels going haywire. They told us that apple slices with nut butter, Greek yogurt with berries, and baked apples with cinnamon are some of the best options. Read on to discover all seven.

1. Berries and cream

It's no secret that berries are packed with incredible health benefits. When you add some cream to the mix, you've got yourself a dessert that's equal parts tasty and healthy.

"Berries are a fantastic dessert choice for diabetics due to their low glycemic index, meaning they won't cause a significant spike in blood sugar levels," Nanavati says. "Pairing them with cream, preferably a light or sugar-free version, adds a satisfying touch of indulgence without a big dose of carbohydrates." Sounds delicious!

2. Almond flour cookies

Who says diabetics can't enjoy cookies? According to Nanavati, naturally sweetened almond flour cookies make a great alternative to their processed, sugary counterparts.

"Almond flour is a great low-carb, high-protein alternative to regular flour," she assures us. "Cookies made from almond flour, sweetened with a sugar substitute like Stevia, can satisfy a sweet tooth without causing a large spike in blood sugar. They also provide a good source of healthy fats." Our mouths are watering!

3. Apple Slices with Nut Butter

When it comes to satisfying your sweet tooth without the sugar rush, apple slices paired with nut butter are a match made in heaven. According to Feder, "Apple slices won't spike your blood sugar nearly as much when paired with a healthy fat such as nut butter." The healthy fats present in nut butter play a crucial role in stabilizing blood sugar levels. Feder emphasizes, "Pairing any fruit with a healthy fat will help keep your blood sugars from spiking as high." Moreover, the fiber content in apples adds another layer of blood sugar regulation, making this dessert choice a winning combination.

4. Greek Yogurt with Berries

If you're craving something creamy and satisfying, gut-healthy Greek yogurt with berries is the way to go. Feder explains, "Greek yogurt with berries is another great healthy dessert even for pre-diabetics." The high protein and healthy fats in Greek yogurt contribute to keeping blood sugars in check. Feder adds, "The fiber from the fruit can also help keep blood sugars under control as well." This dessert not only pleases your taste buds but also provides a nutritious punch, making it a guilt-free indulgence.

5. Baked Apples with Cinnamon

Who says desserts can't be both comforting and blood sugar-friendly? Baked apples with a sprinkle of cinnamon offer a delightful treat that won't send your glucose levels on a rollercoaster ride. Feder suggests, "Baked apples with cinnamon is a great dessert option for diabetics or pre-diabetics." The fiber-rich nature of apples helps prevent blood sugar spikes, while cinnamon is known for its ability to regulate blood sugars. This cozy dessert is not only a feast for the senses but also a smart choice for those mindful of their pre-diabetic condition.

6. Dark chocolate-covered nuts

Dark chocolate, with its higher cocoa content, tends to be lower in sugar compared to milk chocolate, making it a suitable choice for those monitoring their blood sugar levels. Nuts, such as almonds or walnuts, contribute not only to the dessert's satisfying crunch but also provide a healthy dose of protein and beneficial fats.

"Dark chocolate-covered nuts are naturally lower in sugar compared to milk chocolate. Additionally, they have the added benefit of protein and fiber from the nuts," Feder says.

7. Berry and avocado smoothie

This smoothie typically combines antioxidant-rich berries such as strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries with creamy avocado and a liquid base like almond milk or coconut water. Berries are low in sugar and high in fiber, which helps slow down the absorption of sugars into the bloodstream and promotes stable blood sugar levels. Avocado adds healthy fats and a creamy texture, further contributing to blood sugar regulation.

Dr. Huffman adds that "berries are low-glycemic and high in antioxidants, while avocado is rich in good fats and fiber. When combined with a smoothie dessert, it’s a better way to stabilize blood sugar levels."
