Actress Emily Blunt shares a sincere apology after a 2012 clip of her calling a waitress “enormous” goes viral—but will fans forgive? In the Oppenheimer actress’ recent apology she states, “I was appalled that I would say something so insensitive” and “hurtful.” Yet fans are saying, “f*** off!”

When Emily Blunt appeared on the Johnathan Ross show in 2012 to promote the recently released movie Looper, she made some unnecessary comments about the weight of a waitress that served her at Chili’s. Now, over 20 years later, the mom of two is issuing a heartfelt apology.

When the Looper actress appeared on the Johnathan Ross show to talk about the filming of the movie, she mentioned they were staying in a small town where the only restaurant was Chili’s. Ross cracked a joke, saying, “When you go to chilis you can see why so many of our American friends are enormous,” speaking of the comparatively large portion sizes in America next to the U.K.

But Emily took it a step too far, replying, “The girl that was serving me was enormous. I think she got freebee meals at Chili’s.” Not cool, Emily!

Emily Blunt issues an apology

In a statement to People magazine, Emily Blunt apologized, saying her “jaw was on the floor” watching that clip. “I was appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful, and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show,” she said. “I’ve always considered myself someone who wouldn’t dream of upsetting anyone, so whatever possessed me to say anything like this in that moment is unrecognizable to me or anything I stand for.” Hopefully, the Jungle Cruise actress has matured since she made those fat-shaming comments, but fans aren’t so forgiving.

Fans blast Emily Blunt for fat-shaming

When the clip went viral on TikTok and X, fans were quick to call out the A Quiet Place actress: “Imagine being that fan and [then] hearing this story later,” one fan said. “Really speaks to how people just fat-shame others literally out of nowhere, no matter the context—to people like Emily Blunt, just existing and having the audacity to speak to someone means you should be shamed.”

“She could have told that same story without talking about how fat the fan was,” one user pointed out. “So many layers of ‘oh f*** off’ in this one,” another added.

Some fans, though, recognized Blunt’s apology, and just hope she’s learned her lesson: “Very disappointing, one user said. “Although being that this is 10 years old, she’s probably matured and has learned more empathy and kindness.”

Here’s to hoping Blunt’s apology can win fans back—and that fat-shaming is a thing of the past.
