Fiber is your weight loss BFF. When you start your day off with fiber-filled food it keeps you satiated so your body can get right to burning off calories. Which breakfast will boost metabolism best?
“Steel-cut oatmeal is high in fiber and has been shown to lower cholesterol levels and aid in digestion,” says Suzanne Jezek-Arriaga, nutrition and holistic health coach and the author of Nourish to Flourish. It’s key to choose oats that haven’t been refined (that means the fiber content is meh). Steel-cut oats are pure drops of fiber.
“The more fiber you eat, the fewer calories you absorb from all the other stuff you put in your mouth,” says Jezek-Arriaga. Experts say that it's best to get between 25 and 35 grams of fiber every day.
Starting the day off with fiber helps metabolism because fiber traps food particles and shuttles them out of your system before they're fully digested. That means your body is hard at work turning calories into energy and not fat.
Add other fiber-rich foods to your bowl of oats. We love berries and crunchy apple slices. “Raw fruit has great fiber and chewing sends signals to your brain that you’ve eaten something substantial,” says Jezek-Arriaga. Throw in a handful of almonds. “They contain fiber to fill you up, protein to boost your metabolism, and magnesium to boost your energy levels,” she says.
