You limit sweets, stay away from greasy foods, and drink a ton of water–so why is your skin still breaking out? If this sounds like you, then it’s time to take a closer look at your diet.
You are what you eat, or rather, your skin is what you eat. If you fuel your body with unhealthy foods, it can reflect negatively on your complexion. But what about those who eat really, really healthy yet keep breaking out? One of the most common food mistakes that can cause breakouts may not be what you expect.
If you struggle with acne, dermatologists recommend giving up dairy products. Believe it or not, drinking milk and eating things like yogurt can be the reason you can’t stop breaking out all over your face.
“Hormones are the main factor thought to increase acne,” Jennifer Burris, RD, a doctoral candidate in nutrition at NYU Steinhardt, told Women’s Health. “Milk contains a lot of hormones, and they remain high even after processing.”
Just like women are more likely to experience hormonal acne flare-ups when they get their periods each month, dairy products are able to do the same.
Animal products like diary spike blood sugar and hormone levels, leaving to pimples soon after consumption. If you’re someone who drinks milk regularly, even just in your coffee, this could lead to an increase in acne.
To clear up your face and solve your acne problems for good, try cutting dairy from your diet. Instead, opt for dairy-free products like vegan, almond, or soy milk, cheese, and other products.
