The One Food You Should Never Eat For Weight Loss (Say It Ain't So!)

When you’re trying to lose weight, the list of banned foods goes on and on. It’s a never-ending battle with some of your favorite treats. While there are plenty of foods that can ruin your diet with just a few bites, there’s one food that is loaded with so many fats and sugars, it causes you to pack on the calories in a big way.

French fries, and all other fried potatoes for that matter, are the worst offenders in the food world when it comes to destroying your weight loss goals. While it shouldn't come as a surprise that fried potatoes come in at number one on the list, many people don't understand exactly just how bad they are for you and still continue to eat them.

French fries, chips, and even breakfast potatoes are all dangerous if you're on a diet. Sad news, we know--they just taste so good! The reason they're considered to be so bad is due to a combination of things.

 

For starters, they have a high glycemic index, which causes blood sugar levels to spike. When your blood sugar levels stay too high for too long, you gain weight. "The kicker is that once you have blood sugar problems, it's much harder to do the one thing that can really help: slim down," says Dr. Osama Hamdy. Eventually, too much extra sugar is stored as fat.

Another reason fried potatoes are so terrible for you is the high amount of added fats that are in them. French fries are rich in trans and saturated fats (the really bad kinds). 1 large order of McDonald's French Fries contains 24 grams of fat in them, with 3.5 grams coming from saturated fats. That's 36% of your total daily value!

 

Considering fries are eaten as a side to your meal, that's a serious problem. According to the American Heart Association, unhealthy fats raise the cholesterol levels in your blood which not only makes you fat, but also increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. The common cooking process for deep frying potatoes in oil also adds additional fat--yummy, huh?

Not only will french fries pack on the pounds and keep you from losing weight, but they can also have serious long-term effects on your health. Since they often come as a side to many meals at restaurants and are dangerously easy to scarf down mindlessly, it's a good idea to avoid the fried food completely.
