Costco is one of the best places to go if you’re looking to get a lot of groceries that will last you quite a while. However, like all grocery stores, it does have its fair share of items that won’t benefit you much health-wise.

The buy-in-bulk, mega store is well-known for having a large variety of items, and while that’s the case, it doesn’t mean they’re all healthy or necessarily smart choices for weight loss or other health goals. A registered dietitian and TikTok content creator, Courtney Kassis, recently made a video about some of the items she would avoid from Costco, and the ones she’d buy as a healthier alternative. Read more about four of them below.

1. PAM Canola Oil Spray

Although it's super convenient, the PAM spray products with canola oil aren't the healthiest oil choice, especially since researchers and the health community are discovering more and more about how seed oils can harm your health.

"This PAM spray is an absolute no for me," says Courtney in her video. "It's low-quality oil, so I skip it."

Instead, Courtney opts for avocado oil in a spray bottle, which she says is always a "yes," and a more nutritious source of fat.

2. Nature's Path Pumpkin Seed & Flax Granola

Granola is a tricky item, as while it seems like it would always be healthy, used in yogurt bowls and other typically nutrient-dense foods, it can often get packed with sugar when store-bought.

"I'm skipping this one with a lot of sugar per serving," notes the dietitian.

During her shopping trip, Courtney chose a honey nut granola blend from Nutrail Nut Granola, which she says is made with "minimal ingredients" and is "low sugar."

3. Quaker Flavored Instant Oatmeal Packs

One of the most classic breakfasts around this time of year that's warm and hearty is oatmeal, as it's filling and can be paired with various flavor elements. However, Courtney notes it's best to avoid some of the pre-flavored variety instant oatmeal packs you see, as they're often hiding a lot of added sugar.

"I'm all for convenience, but these instant oatmeal packs are a no," she says. "They're super sugary, low-protein, and [have] zero staying-power."

Instead, she grabs plain, sprouted rolled oats to make her own oatmeal from scratch at home.

4. Chobani 'Fruit On The Bottom' Greek Yogurt Cups

Another super popular breakfast option is Greek yogurt, which is known for including a high amount of protein and nutritious probiotics. However, some premade Greek yogurt cups, like the Chobani option with fruit preserves on the bottom, are often sweetened with excessive amounts of refined sugar.

"You guys already know the 'fruit on the bottom' yogurt cups are a no from me," Courtney adds.

As an alternative, she buys large containers of plain, low-fat Greek yogurt to add her own toppings and healthier sweeteners.
