These days, taking supplements is a really popular part of people’s health and wellness routines. However, if you don’t speak to your doctor about which ones you should be taking and how much, they can potentially be dangerous.

Sometimes, it’s strongly advised that people who have other health conditions or take a medication for some kind of condition be wary of which supplements they take. After all, there can be interferences and other side effects that can end up hurting your health over time, including your heart health. Therefore, we spoke to a Registered Dietitian specializing in sports nutrition & wellness nutrition, Courtney Pelitera, MS, RD, CNSC, with Top Nutrition, and gathered research to break down four popular supplements that can “increase” someone’s risk of heart health problems. Read more about them below.

1. L-arginine

If you haven't heard of this supplement, it's growing in popularity, as it has a reputation for increasing circulation, relaxing blood vessels, and even helping men's libido. However, both Pelitera and health experts at Harvard Health have noted that it can be risky to take when it comes to those with existing health problems.

"If you're taking blood thinners, it may increase the risk for bleeding," noted Harvard Health. "And if you're taking ACE inhibitors, it might cause your potassium levels to spike."

Pelitera shared similar insight, noting, "This supplement can cause blood pressure to drop too low for those already with heart disease, especially if already taking medications to manage blood pressure."

2. St. John's Wort

St. John's Wort is an herbal supplement that derives from a flowering plant named Hypericum perforatum. It is said to be a natural remedy for improving mental health and treating mild to moderate cases of depression. While many people have found it to be beneficial for them, it's crucial to speak to a medical professional before taking it, as it's also famous for interacting and interfering with all sorts of medications, including heart medicine.

"This cannot be taken while you are also taking warfarin, calcium channel blockers, and any kind of statin or cholesterol medication," explains Pelitera. "St. John's Wort will interact with all of these medications, potentially affecting the heart and blood circulation."

3. Garlic Supplements

Garlic is not just for seasoning food and making specific recipes extra delicious - it's also known for having various health benefits. It contains compounds that are known for helping to naturally lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, which is excellent. However, you'll want to be a little cautious before taking higher doses of a garlic supplement, especially if you or your family has a history of blood clotting.

"Some people take garlic to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure, but if you are taking medication, it can increase the effects of blood thinners, cholesterol-lowering medications, and blood pressure medications," says Pelitera. "This can create low blood pressure and risk for heart problems."

4. Beta-Carotene Supplements

Beta-Carotene is a compound that is essential for our health, as it promotes growth and is converted in our bodies as vitamin A, therefore helping various bodily functions and parts, like our eyes, skin, and more. Some people may not get enough of it in their diets, which is how most people receive it, so there are supplements high in beta-carotene on the market.

However, Pelitera warns that a 2022 study revealed that taking supplements with higher doses of beta-carotene can be dangerous.

"A recent 2022 study found that Beta carotene supplementation actually increases the risk for cardiovascular disease in patients," she explains.
