2 High-Sugar Drinks That Can ‘Rob Your Skin Of Its Natural Glow’ And Cause ‘Deeper Wrinkles’: Soda, More

January 30, 2026 by Mariam Qayum

What you sip throughout the day plays a major role in how your skin ages—especially after 50, when collagen levels naturally decline and skin becomes more prone to dryness and thinning. Dermatologists say certain popular drinks can quietly accelerate wrinkles, dehydration, and loss of elasticity, making them worth limiting or avoiding altogether.

1. Sodas

Sodas—both regular and diet—are some of the worst offenders when it comes to premature skin aging. Dr. Cheryl Rosen, Director of Dermatology at BowTied Life, explains that even sugar-free sodas often contain “chemicals that are harmful to the body,” which can contribute to inflammation and early wrinkling.

“Chemicals like phosphorus, potassium, and caffeine leach minerals from the bones and can damage the cells in the body,” she says. Dr. Elaine F. Kung, MD, FAAD, adds that the sugar in regular sodas accelerates a process called glycation, where glucose and fructose damage collagen and elastin. This leads to advanced glycation end products (AGEs) that make skin harder to repair, resulting in deeper wrinkles and a dull, dehydrated appearance. If you crave bubbles, dermatologists recommend opting for plain seltzer or kombucha instead.

2. Processed Bottled Coffees

While coffee itself isn’t the enemy, dermatologists warn that processed, bottled coffee drinks can wreak havoc on aging skin. These beverages often contain added sugars, syrups, artificial flavorings, and preservatives that promote dehydration and inflammation.

“These kinds of coffees are full of toxins that can leave the skin dry and dehydrated, especially when consumed excessively,” says Dr. Nadir Qazi, DO. He adds that while caffeine provides an energy boost, heavily processed versions can “rob your skin of the elasticity you desire and reduce your skin’s natural glow.” Dana Ellis Hunnes, PhD, MPH, notes that bottled lattes frequently contain added fats, sweeteners, and colorings that further stress the skin. Making coffee at home or choosing black coffee can help minimize damage while still delivering your morning caffeine fix.

The bottom line

Avoiding high-sugar and heavily processed beverages isn’t just about overall health—it directly impacts the condition of your skin as you age. Drinks like sodas and bottled coffees introduce sugars, chemicals, and additives that accelerate collagen and elastin breakdown, leading to fine lines, deeper wrinkles, and dryness. By choosing water, herbal teas, or lightly flavored sparkling water instead, you can support hydration, preserve skin elasticity, and maintain a more radiant, youthful complexion.

Even small changes in daily beverage choices can make a visible difference over time, helping skin stay plump, smooth, and glowing well into your 50s and beyond.
