The end of the year is when we start to reminisce about the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year. This is especially true when it comes to our fitness goals.
Want to finish the year strong and fulfill some of the weight loss resolutions you set out for yourself? Experts say that incorporating a nutrient-rich drink like green tea into your diet will not only help you burn calories but also boosts the metabolism and helps reprogram your body to make healthier lifestyle choices.
Green tea gets is metabolism-boosting properties from its powerful blend of polyphenols that are filled with important catechins that promote a healthy metabolism. The biggest polyphenol is epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which researchers note is the tea's predominant active ingredient.
A study in International Journal of Obesity examined how different doses of EGCG and found that EGCG reduced the amount of weight gain, which exclusively came from body fat. The study showed this effect was not due to a decrease in food intake but rather a reduction in the absorption of energy.
The researchers also found that the compound played a role in increasing fat oxidation, which Jeff S. Volek, Ph.D., R.D., says is due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme that breaks down norepinephrine.
"Green tea may also act to reduce food intake and inhibit the main enzymes involved in fat storage," he adds.
