President Donald Trump famously said he would build a border wall that Mexico would pay for during his 2016 campaign. When he was campaigning against the then president in 2020, Joe Biden said “there will not be another foot of wall constructed” during his presidency if he were to make it to the White House. However, he seems to have gone back on his promise and has now decided to go ahead with it (perhaps following pressure after Title 42 came to an end back in May) which he is understandably being slammed for.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, October 6th, Biden reportedly said: “The wall thing? Yeah. Well, I was told that I had no choice.” He added: “That I, you know, Congress passes legislation to build something, whether it’s an aircraft carrier wall or provide for a tax cut. I can’t say, ‘I don’t like it. I’m not going to do it.'”

If you’ll recall, Biden came out against the border wall at the start of his presidency, with the White House releasing the following press release in 2021: “Like every nation, the United States has a right and a duty to secure its borders and protect its people against threats. But building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border is not a serious policy solution. It is a waste of money that diverts attention from genuine threats to our homeland security.”

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas filed a notice on Wednesday, October 4th in the federal register about the construction of 18-foot-tall steel fencing that will cover about 20 miles along the border in Texas. According to the New York Times, the funds for the wall had been approved by Congress during Trump’s presidency, and Biden reportedly said he had no power to block their use.

Bill Maher Slams Joe Biden For 'Adopting' Donald Trump's Policy

Liberal comedian and HBO Real Time host Bill Maher slammed Biden's change regarding border security, calling it "a disaster for the Democrats." He added: "Trump today said he wants Biden to apologize because it looks like Biden was adopting his policy. This does not look good for the Democrats."

"Also they look like sanctuary city hypocrites," Maher continued. "They were the ones who said, 'Look, we're the compassionate people. Everybody should get a shot here.' And then when they started sending – I mean the quotes from Eric Adams, this is the mayor of liberal New York, 'This issue will destroy our city.'"

Donald Trump Says He Will Await An 'Apology' From Joe Biden Regarding The 'Beautiful Border Wall'

Maher was right when he said that Trump, who is currently campaigning for a second term in the White House, demanded an apology now that Biden is going ahead with the building of the wall. "So interesting to watch Crooked Joe Biden break every environmental law in the book to prove that I was right when I built 560 miles (they incorrectly state 450 in story!) of brand new, beautiful border wall," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on October 5th.

"As I have stated often, over thousands of years, there are only two things that have consistently worked, wheels, and walls! Will Joe Biden apologize to me and America for taking so long to get moving, and allowing our country to be flooded with 15 million illegals immigrants, from places unknown. I will await his apology!"

Mayorkas Responds To Criticism Over Border Decision

Due to public reaction to the October 4th notice, Mayorkas issued another statement the following day to clarify that there is "no new Administration policy with respect to border walls" and that "this Administration has made clear that a border wall is not the answer."

"The language in the Federal Register notice is being taken out of context and it does not signify any change in policy whatsoever," he added, to try and clarify that the Biden administration is not turning back on its promise not to continue Trump’s work on the border wall. Mayorkas went on to explain how the funding was approved by the prior administration in 2019 and that "the law requires the government to use these funds for this purpose, which we announced earlier this year. We have repeatedly asked Congress to rescind this money but it has not done so and we are compelled to follow the law."
