The British Academy of Film and Television Awards are set to take place on Thursday, Feb. 18th with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in attendance, according to a tweet posted by the official Twitter of the Kensington Palace. While this public outing shouldn’t come as a surprise considering the Duke of Cambridge is president of the organization, the Duchess has a tough decision to make in regard to her evening attire.

In lieu of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movement, all attendees of the BAFTAs are to follow suit of the American stars last month at the Golden Globes and wear all black. So, the BAFTAs plan to show their support and blackout the red carpet–what seems to be the problem? In a sea of all black at the BAFTAs, Kate Middleton may be the only woman in a colorful gown. The wardrobe suggestion puts Kate Middleton in a difficult position.
Being a member of the Royal family comes with a number of rules and regulations. You must abide by a certain hem length, never wear bright nail polish, and follow proper etiquette while in the public eye. You may or may not know this, but British Royals are strictly prohibited from making any political statements. They are “to remain strictly neutral with respect to political matters,” (which even includes barring them from voting). Despite Kate’s personal opinions towards the movement, she is banned from expressing them.
On top of supporting the black dress code being a big no-no for political reasons, the color is typically reserved for Remembrance Day and other somber commemorative events in the Royal family.
That royal rule in mind, The Duchess of Cambridge has a tricky choice to make with Thursday’s awards quickly approaching: stand in solidarity with her fellow sisters or risk standing out for all the wrong reasons and upsetting the British Parliament.
At last year’s BAFTAs Kate wore a black dress by Alexander McQueen with specs of color which may be a safe choice for this year’s award show but we’ll have to see. No matter what she wears, we know she’ll look stunning.
Are you just as intrigued as we are by some of the wacky rules the Royals have to follow? Then you’ll want to read why Kate always keeps her jacket on while in public. Hint: It’s not just to look fashionable.
