Kelly Ripa is no stranger to internet trolls. The Live With Kelly And Ryan co-host has been making headlines recently due to the negative comments she’s been getting on her Instagram posts. They’ve been insulting her weight, clothing choices, and even saying negative things about her on the pictures her husband, Mark Consuelos, posts of her.
Body shamers called her figure “boyish” and questioned the appropriateness of her posts. Mark has come to her defense several times, telling the trolls that Ripa’s commitment to healthy eating and exercising is “admirable.” And now, Ripa’s longtime trainer, Anna Kaiser, is stepping in.
“Everyone should focus on their goals,” she tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “Being strong and powerful in our own bodies is the goal.”
Kaiser is a celebrity trainer whose clients include Hilary Duff, Shakira, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Karlie Kloss, and trains using her own method, the AKT Program. Her intent is to develop personalized programs for each of her clients, which she says has helped Ripa reach her personal fitness and nutrition goals. As for the trolls, she says that there’s nothing wrong with Ripa’s body or the way she looks.
“She works so hard, both with fitness and nutrition,” Kaiser explains. “She feels good in her skin and empowered as a woman. I would love for other women and men to feel that same way. To feel stronger in their own bodies and excited about their own program, instead of looking to use someone else as a goal. That’s what she loves, but someone else may have a completely different goal with fitness and health.”
But regardless of her clients’ fitness goals, Kaiser strongly believes in not setting expectations based on how someone else looks, which is largely due to everyone’s misconceptions of how they want their bodies to look and how fast they think they’ll be able to achieve it. Kaiser reminds all of her clients, even the celebrity ones, that they won’t see drastic results from a new routine until nearly three months later.
“Everyone wants to see results within the next two or three days,” Kaiser says. “I was actually just in Barcelona with Shakira. She had an injury, so she had to postpone her tour for nine months, and it’s hard to come back from that. I went out there to get her going and, again, take it one step at a time, one day at a time. We set up a three-month goal so that in three months from that initial day, she’s going to feel really good about her stamina, her endurance, her ability to stand up in front of a crowd and own that moment and get through the entire two-hour show without crashing.”
Kaiser also shared another fitness tip: Not only do you need to keep an open mind and be patient, but you also need to make sure that your workout routine is filled with activities that you actually enjoy doing.
“It’s really important to have something on a fitness level that you love to do because then you’ll show up and actually do it. So, I love dancing, interval training, and circuit training — so I really look forward to my workouts every day at AKT,” she explains. “Because 80 percent of working out is literally just showing up, and then we take it from there.”
True that! We’ll definitely be taking a cue from Kelly and Anna to help us reach our fitness goals.
