Following a healthy diet and exercise routine is your best defense against weight gain. When it comes to dieting, New York-based nutritionist Regina Fazzini says that those looking to lose fat should focus on creating low-calorie meals for themselves that pack a nutritious punch.

“Weight loss diets work when they’re high in protein, fiber, and nutrients,” she tells SheFinds. “It’s also best to keep everything low in calories and unhealthy fats. When combined with frequent exercise, you will start to see some progress.”

In fact, there’s one food that Fazzini and other fitness experts recommend for its metabolism-boosting effects: Salmon!

Salmon is rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure and decrease risk factors for disease. The healthy fish is also low in calories and high in protein, making it an excellent lean source of protein to enjoy.

"In addition to being low in calories, salmon is also a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins, which your body needs for turning the food you eat into energy," Fazzini continues.

Experts say that salmon can also assist with curbing cravings and reducing appetite, which will help keep you on track with your fat loss routine.

Not sure how to incorporate salmon into your diet? Fazzini says it's best to start off slow and add a serving to your meals twice a week.

"I always tell my patients to add salmon into recipes where you would normally use chicken," she says. "It goes great with whole grains and veggies and makes an excellent protein for salads."
