The Best Contour Hacks For A Double Chin, According To A Makeup Artist

Knowing how to contour your face can help dramatically enhance your best features like cheekbones and bone structure, while also concealing others you might want to tone down, like acne, dark eye circles or even a double chin.

We spoke with a professional makeup artist who shared her favorite 5 essential and handy makeup hacks for contouring a double chin area. Read on for helpful tips and steps from expert Kristen Fortier, MUA and Product Innovation Lead for Crunchi Cosmetics.

1. Define The Jawline

Using a matte bronzer, Fortier says to apply the product using a fluffy brush in small circular motions. “Work from one side of the jaw, just below the ears, to the other and blend down toward the neck,” she says. This step is crucial as it sets the foundation for the others that follow, and creating the illusion of a sharp jawline can distract from anything else you want to conceal.

2. Avoid Shimmer Around The Jawline

3. Highlight The Highpoints Of The Face

It’s important not to forget to contour and highlight other areas of the face to bring the attention upward, as Fortier says to “bronze or contour the cheekbones, nose, and around the top” of the forehead. “Apply blush just above the apples of the cheeks and blend toward the hairline,” she says, noting to add highlighter to the tops of the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, and right above the brows, as well.

4. Fully Blend (Blending is Key!)

Fully blending all contour or bronzer products is the best way “for the most natural and seamless finish,” Fortier explains. If needed, she also says you can “go over the product with your foundation brush,” (without adding any more product) to blend and help create a beautiful “airbrush” finish.

5. Lastly, Draw Attention Away From The Chin

The last and one of the most memorable tips (that can apply to so many other makeup looks!) is to know that emphasize your other features can always draw away from the spots you don’t want to point out. “My favorite tip to bring attention away from the chin is to wear a smokey eye look or a bold lip,” Fortier says. These, she stresses, are both easy ways to bring attention to another area of the face and give you a chance to change up your day-to-day makeup looks.
