Natural oils make a great addition to any beauty routine as they’re loaded with nourishing nutrients that moisturize and repair dry, damaged hair, skin, and nails. But dermatologists say that castor oil is the best of them all. In fact, it has the power to improve your hair quality and thickness, while also working as an effective moisturizer for the skin. Heck, it can even help clear acne and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, too!
Here’s why castor oil should be in everyone’s skincare routine right now:
Castor oil has amazing hydrating properties that can heal even the driest of skin. You can add a few drops to your lips if you're experiencing chapped lips, or apply some to your scalp to combat dandruff and irritation.
"It's an incredible emollient and moisturizer," Rachel Nazarian, MD, tells BYRDIE. "Castor oil is known to enhance penetration of other products as well. I will typically apply my own moisturizer followed by a very thin layer of castor oil top. This allows for even better absorption of the cream." And, all of that hydration is great for aging skin!
The natural oil also works wonders on acne prone skin and breakouts, especially for acne that's caused by stress or poor diet, according to PureWow. Add some drops to a cotton round and dab it where acne is forming. Leave it on overnight and allow the bacteria-fighting ricinoleic acid in castor oil to work its magic on your blemishes.
In addition to helping moisturize dry skin and clear acne, castor oil also works wonders on hair, too! It contains omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, which both promote healthy hair growth. Just rub some castor oil into your scalp and allow it to moisturize and stimulate circulation to start regrowth.
That being said, castor oil can also help you get thicker brows and lashes. If you need help growing your brows naturally, apply castor oil to a spoolie brush (we love this $3 one from e.l.f. Cosmetics) and comb it through your brows. You can do the same for your lashes, too!
Now that you know all of the amazing benefits of castor oil, you're probably wondering where to get it, right? Good news: You can pick it up on your next Target run!
