Neutrogena recently issued a recall for certain Neutrogena Makeup Remover Ultra-Soft Cleansing Towelettes due to potential bacterial contamination with Pluralibacter gergoviae. While this bacterium poses minimal risk to healthy individuals, it can lead to serious infections in people with weakened immune systems.

The recall affects some 50-count and 25-pack towelettes distributed in states including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Texas. The FDA has classified it as a Class II recall, meaning exposure could cause temporary or medically reversible health issues, though serious problems are unlikely. For those with compromised immunity or chronic health conditions, the bacterium could potentially trigger respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, eye infections, or even sepsis.

Consumers who have the affected product should stop using it immediately and can return it to the place of purchase for a refund. No illnesses have been reported from this contamination so far.

For a safer alternative, consider switching to washable reusable makeup remover pads or single-use alcohol-free, preservative-free wipes from brands that prioritize clean ingredients, which can help reduce the risk of bacterial exposure while keeping your skin clean and healthy.
