Nicole Kidman is one of Hollywood’s most private celebrities, especially when it comes to talking about her past relationship with Tom Cruise and their kids, Isabella, 25, and Connor, 23. There has been speculation that her relationship with her children has become strained, but the Big Little Lies actress says that’s far from the truth.
In fact, she recently made an unexpected statement about Isabella and Connor in an interview with WHO Magazine, setting the record straight once and for all on their relationship.
There have been several reports connecting Isabella and Connor's ties to the Church of Scientology to their strained relationship with Kidman. The actress didn't deny this in the interview, but she did say that their religious beliefs have never altered her love for them.
"They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions,” she said. "They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them. And I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe — that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here.”
She also revealed the reason why she doesn't prefer to discuss her children during interviews, explaining that their privacy and well-being always comes first to her.
"I have to protect all those relationships,” Kidman continued. “I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is.”
This interview comes weeks after Kidman got candid about what her marriage to Cruise was like. She revealed that she "wasn’t going out a lot" during their relationship and gave fans a rare glimpse of what her married life looked like.
"Because I was married at 23 years old, I wasn’t going to parties or I wasn’t going out a lot. I was pretty much at home,” she explained on Monday, Oct. 22 on Today. “I had my first child at 25 and I was married, I was in a family. So my sense of being in the world was… I was working, or I was at home.”
She also explained that she doesn't like to talk about Cruise because she feels it's "disrespectful" in the sense that he wasn't her great love. "Being married to Tom Cruise at 22 is something I’m always reluctant to talk about because I’m married now to the man who is my great love, and it almost feels disrespectful,” she said. "That said, I got married very young, but it definitely wasn’t power for me — it was protection.”
