There are so many skincare and makeup trends out there on social media, it’s hard to keep up with what actually works and what’s just another gimmick. However, one thing about social media and the generation that has brought it to the forefront is the way that it allows tips and “skincare hacks” to be shared. Information is being spread like never before, especially when it comes to skincare products and which ones are worth using. Janelle Thomason, a licensed esthetician and the founder of Cosmakery Cosmetics and The Makeup Loft, shared with us what products she sees younger people using that older generations may not know about.

Herbal Sprays

If you want your skin to look more youthful, you should opt for techniques that emphasize a natural look. One thing that can help with this is using products that emphasize dewyness. One product that Thomason recommends to her older clientele is the cult favorite Mario Badescu's Facial Spray. Made with aloe, herbs, and rosewater, this product is great for giving you a quick and easy dewy glow. It’s also made with thyme extract, which has clarifying properties.

Squalene

Squalene is a plant derived compound that promotes hydration first and foremost. One thing that immediately ages your skin is chronic dehydration, so using products that promote moisture is key to maintaining a youthful glow. Thomason recommends The ordinary’s plant derived squalene  as a high quality option—although it has an oily texture, it is compatible with all skin types.

Retinol                                                                                                                                       We’ve all heard about retinol being a holy grail for aging, but one thing that the twenty year olds have figured out is that starting retinol use early is a way to boost its power. While it works to diminish fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles through triggering collagen production, it can also minimize pores and breakouts. Thomason recommends the Skin Ceuticals retinol night cream—but be sure to look into the risks of retinol and the proper way to use it before you add it to your regular routine.

Lip Masks                                                                                                                            Another thing that the twenty year olds know a lot about is the value of a good face mask, but did you know they make masks for your lips too? Nourishing your lips is just as important as your skin, and it’s one part of your face you may neglect that shows signs of aging too. Thomason recommends the Lip Sleeping Mask by Laneige as a quality product that will pack your lips with moisture and nutrients.
