You probably apply mascara to your top lashes first, and that’s a big mistake, says Marlena, founder and CEO of the blog Makeup Geek. To prevent dots and smudging on your eyelids and under eyes, start with your bottom lashes first. Then, when applying to your top lashes, look straight ahead and start at the base, using a zig-zag motion while going up. "This will help give your lashes a curled effect. Keep repeating this until you get your lashes as thick as you want, usually two to three coats,” says Marlena.

Don’t pump your wand so much into the tube! Excessively doing that gets air trapped in the tube, drying out your mascara. Instead, Marlena advises to “gently twist the wand back and forth or in circular motions to pick up the desired amount of product.” If you’re still getting clumping, use a lash separator or an old mascara wand (wash it first)!

Invest in an eyelash curler, it’s so worth it! They lift your lashes and help make your eyes look bigger, according to makeup artist Sonia Kashuk. "An eyelash curler goes hand in hand with mascara,” she told Good Housekeeping. Curl your lashes at the root, but be careful not to get any skin caught in it. Press and hold for about 10 seconds, and then repeat at the end of your eyelashes. Then, voilá, your lashes look twice as long and lifted!

Sticking to just one mascara isn’t doing you or your lashes any favors, according to professional makeup artist Laramie. "Each mascara has one purpose, no matter what the advertising says," she said. "Certain ones give you a lot of length, while others offer thickness and volume." Try buying two mascaras with two different purposes and see the amazing results for yourself!
