This year’s Met Gala was filled with so many memorable, envelope-pushing dresses, but it looks like there’s one that’s getting a lot of flack from fans.
Scarlett Johansson attended the annual event wearing an off-the-shoulder burgundy dress with a tulle skirt and floral appliqués from Marchesa, which got a lot of attention for its controversial designer, Georgina Chapman, who is the estranged wife of disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.
Marchesa's designs have been noticeably absent from all the major red carpets this year following the wake of the Weinstein sexual assault scandal, so Johansson's gown definitely made quite the statement.
In fact, E! News reports that she's the first celebrity that has worn a gown from the label since!
Following the backlash for her bold fashion choice, Johansson released a statement explaining her choice to wear the brand.
"I wore Marchesa because their clothes make women feel confident and beautiful and it is my pleasure to support a brand created by two incredibly talented and important female designers," she said.
Marchesa also released a similar statement, saying, "We are truly honored that Scarlett chose to wear Marchesa for the Met Gala. She is an amazingly talented actor who has incredible style and presence. It was wonderful to work so closely with her in creating this custom look."
