Selena Gomez is seeking treatment to address her ongoing issues related to anxiety and depression. News broke that the 26-year-old has entered a treatment facility in wake of “arising health issues.”
“Selena has been trying really hard recently to remain focused, and not let her health affect her,” an insider tells E! News. “She has been actively writing new music, and moved to Orange County for a change of pace and a fresh breath of air. Ultimately, with all of her arising health issues, Selena started to feel super overwhelmed.”
TMZ was the first to break the story, stating that the singer had suffered an “emotional breakdown” before making the decision to seek treatment. The outlet says that the breakdown came as the result of being hospitalized twice in recent weeks for issues related to her Lupus and last year's kidney transplant.
The singer allegedly received medical attention at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles after her white blood cell count became increasingly low, according to TMZ.
This shocking news comes a month after Gomez spoke candidly about her mental health journey on social media. She told fans that she had been battling depression for “five years straight” in an emotional Instagram Live, adding, “Every time I try to do something right, every time I try to do something good I felt like people were picking me apart."
She also announced that she would be taking a much-needed social media break to “step back” and focus on the present.
"There won't be a day when I'm like, 'Here I am in a pretty dress—I won!' I think it's a battle I'm gonna have to face for the rest of my life, and I'm OK with that because I know that I'm choosing myself over anything else,” Gomez said in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar back in February, revealing that she thinks her anxiety and depression aren’t things she’ll “ever overcome.”
E! News notes that this isn’t Gomez’s first time seeking help for anxiety and depression. The singer completed a two-week treatment program earlier this year in New York City to seek help with these issues. This time around, Gomez will reportedly be dialectical behavior therapy at the same psychiatric facility.
"She had a difficult year, especially towards the end, and she decided she wanted to spend some time focusing on herself. It was all about wellness and her health,” a source close to Gomez told E! News at the time.
