Hair loss can be linked to genetics and lifestyle factors-or it could actually be your shampoo that’s to blame.

For example, when you wash your hair, you expect your shampoo to lather up. But did you know that the chemicals that produce this lather could be causing your strands to thin and fall out? Yikes. The unfortunate truth is that some hair products are working against your goal of achieving a mermaid-like mane, so it’s important to consider your shampoo and conditioner choices carefully. That’s also why we consulted the experts to determine the shampoo that you should be avoiding at all costs.

Sulfates

Sulfates are chemical foaming agents found in most shampoos and conditioners, which are responsible for cleaning oil, dirt and dead skin from your scalp. When used in small amounts, sulfates are safe to use on your scalp. But some shampoos contain high concentrations of sulfates, which can overly strip your hair of essential oils and proteins.

"Some shampoos may offer shine and volume, but they're actually just scented gel with SLS sulfates for foaming," professional hairstylist Monica Davis explains. "It’s not bad to use sulfates, but it’s awful to use them without any compensating components, such as natural oils in the right proportion."

She continues, "Continuous use of shampoos with high amounts of sulfates will make your hair dry and brittle enough for hair loss. You should also limit the use of most thickening shampoos and conditioners as they can potentially clog scalp pores, lead to inflammation, and result in hair loss. Finally, don’t use shampoos that contain sulfur as they can remove too much oil from the scalp and lead to thinning hair."

Because hair is made primarily of protein, when this protein gets damaged or stripped, it leads to weaker strands and ultimately hair fallout. While sulfates aren't directly linked to hair loss, shampoos with high amounts of sulfates can damage the proteins in your hair and trigger a slew of damage.

Instead, try refreshing your shower routine with an A-lister approved shampoo. Something like Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector is a shampoo for thinning hair that celebs like Drew Barrymore and Kim Kardashian have turned to for a pick-me-up. Not only is the cleansing hair treatment made from a concentrated formula to strengthen hair, but it also reduces breakage and improves texture for an instant boost.
