Yes, getting older is inevitable. But the signs of aging don't have to be. Turns out, there's one common skincare habit you're probably making that's causing you to look far beyond your years.
According to experts, the top beauty mistake that ages women is skimping on sunscreen.
“UV light exposure causes free radicals that damage collagen, elastin, and skin cells themselves," Dr. Joshua Zeichner, rector of cosmetic and clinical research in the department of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, told Women's Health. "This leads to premature aging of the skin, with wrinkling, dark spots, and the development of skin cancers. Even short amounts of sun exposure on a daily basis add up over a lifetime."
Even more proof as to why you should lather on the SPF? Australian researchers found that after following 900 people for four years, those that properly applied sunscreen daily were 24 percent less likely to show signs of aging in their skin than those who weren't told to use SPF.
What's more, a lower dose can also go a long way. According to a study published in Dermatologic Surgery, using SPF 30 for 12 weeks was enough to reverse the signs of UV skin damage, such as pigmentation and uneven texture.
Dermatologists recommend using SPF 30 every day and SPF 50 before doing any outdoor activities to ward off harmful rays. So even if you're feeling lazy, don't forget to lather on the sunscreen - your skin will thank you for it later.
