We all know the importance of eating well, but many people don’t actually realize just how far the effects of unhealthy food can go. Not only can excess fats and carbs harm our internal health, but it can also cause premature aging on skin.

And sugar is the worst offender.

It should come as no surprise that sugar is bad for your skin, because it is terrible for our health in every other way. Sugar can lead to weight gain, depression, heart disease and it can even disable appetite control. And it is equally bad for your skin.

“Sugar intake has the greatest effect on skin health, especially for women,” Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank, celebrity cosmetic dermatologist from NYC and author of The Pro-Aging Playbook, told SheFinds.

Dr. Frank continued, “This includes sugar found in desserts and carbs. Reducing sugar intake is shown to drastically affect skin health and breakouts in particular. It takes discipline, but once it is cut out of one’s diet, the cravings disappear, and skin is brighter and healthier.”

The best way to avoid harming your skin or causing it to age prematurely is to limit your sugar intake. The American Heart Association recommends adult women limit their sguar intake to 25 grams per day - yet almost all of us are eating way more than the limit.

According to the American Heart Association, the average adult eats about 72 grams of sugar each day.

Replace sugar with natural sweeteners where you can, and pick healthy snacks over junk food as often as possible. Your skin will thank you for it!
