2019 is your year; the year you’re finally going to live that healthy lifestyle you’ve envisioned for yourself! And it starts with exercising regularly and making better food choices. If you’ve failed at dieting in the past you may want to change your mindset. It can be hard to eat nutritiously when you look at it as a strict diet. Instead, choosing to prioritize your health and making conscious decisions when it comes to the foods you consume can help you finally make that much needed switch. Repeat after us: it’s a lifestyle change, not a diet.
A health diet starts with the foods you put in your grocery cart. After all, if you don’t buy those potato chips or cookies, you can’t snack on them later. Filling your diet -- and your store cart -- with colorful vegetables and fruits will help you finally meet your weight loss goals, once and for all. As far as superfoods go, the one experts say you need to incorporate into your diet is kale.
According to Natalie Stein, a weight loss and sports nutrition expert who works with the Program for Public Health at Michigan State University, kale is a nutrient-dense vegetable that everyone should be eating. The reason this superfood comes so highly recommended is that it’s low in calories and high in fiber, as well as other vitamins and minerals.
“Each cup of raw kale provides 80 milligrams of vitamin C, or 133 percent of the daily value; 6,693 international units of vitamin A, or 133 percent of the daily value; and 472 micrograms of vitamin K, or 590 percent of the daily value. It is also a source of calcium, which supports strong bones; potassium, which can help lower blood pressure; and iron, which is a component of healthy red blood cells,” states Stein in an article for Livestrong.
