So much has been written about how green tea can boost your metabolism and help reduce belly fat that it’s easy to assume there’s only one effective tea on the block. But nothing could be further from the truth.


If you’re looking to switch things up, welcome a cup or two of black tea into your life.

At least one study has found that black tea can help you lose weight — albeit it in a different way from green tea.


“Both black tea and green tea contain polyphenols,” reports Medical News Today. “These are antioxidants that protect cellular structures - such as DNA and cell membranes - against damage from free radicals.”

The polyphenols from green tea are so small that they can be absorbed into the bloodstream and body tissues. Consider this their superpower, as studies have found they affect the liver's energy metabolism in a way that promotes weight loss.


Black tea works differently, but you can still expect the same result: a boost that makes it easier to burn fat and lose weight.

Lead study author Susanne Henning of the Center for Human Nutrition at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA explained to Medical News Today: “Our new findings suggest that black tea, through a specific mechanism through the gut microbiome, may also contribute to good health and weight loss in humans."


We already know that gut health is linked to better overall health and less inflammation in the body (and since inflammation is linked to obesity, this is important if you’re trying to lose weight).


Black tea — or any tea or supplement — can’t work miracles by itself. But, in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise regimen, black tea can help make it easier for you to lose weight and burn fat.
