The One Anti-Aging Vitamin Every Woman Should Start Taking For Fine Lines & Wrinkles, According To A Dermatologist

The secret to younger-looking skin doesn’t always lie at the bottom of a fancy moisturizer or serum. In fact, dermatologists say that your diet can have the biggest impact on the quality, appearance, and overall health of your skin. That’s why it’s recommended to follow a diet that is rich in skin-healthy vitamins and minerals to ensure that your cells are getting the nourishment they need to fight off free radical damage, dryness, fine lines, and more.

One nutrient that most women with mature skin are lacking is omega-3, which is why experts suggest taking a fish oil supplement daily to promote a healthier and younger-looking complexion.

TRY IT: Nature's Bounty Fish Oil ($10.82)

Fish oil supplements contain two very important omega-3 fatty acids: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Dermatologist Doris Day, MD, of Health.com, says that they work together to strengthen the cell membrane and improve the quality of your skin.

"DHA keeps the brain functioning properly. And EPA greatly benefits the skin by regulating oil production to boost hydration and prevent acne, and by delaying the skins aging process to stave off wrinkles," she explains.

She notes that studies show that EPA has been found to play a crucial role in protecting our skin from UV ray-induced damage and photoaging. "Because EPA is both an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory agent, it can protect against sun damage and help repair it," Dr. Day continues.

Dr. Day suggests taking an omega-3 fish oil supplement that contains 180 milligrams of EPA and 120 milligrams of DHA three times a day with each meal. She also recommends incorporating fatty fish into your diet to get more omega-3 fatty acids.

"Most of us don't get enough omega-3s in our diets. Oily fish like herring, mackerel, salmon, anchovies, and tuna are the best sources so it's a good idea to take a supplement," she explains.
