Everyone knows that the key to fat loss is a healthy diet and consistent exercise. Unfortunately, these remain the fundamentals of losing fat and there’s no way around them. But, there are ways to make these mundane weight loss requirements fun—starting with your diet.

Experts say that stubborn belly fat can actually be the cause of chronic inflammation, which is why it’s important to incorporate this anti-inflammatory food into your diet to kickstart fat loss. Dying to know what it is? It’s blueberries!

Blueberries are known for their rich color and sweet tartness, but these little guys are actually filled with inflammation-fighting bioflavonoids, which are also loaded with antioxidants and offer protection from harmful free radicals. The less free radicals in your body, the less inflammation there will be, says nutritionist Alex Caspero, R.D.

Chronic inflammation can throw off your whole body if it goes untreated. To start, Caspero says that it can throw off your hunger mechanism and metabolism-regulating hormones. Inflammation can also spur insulin resistance and make you hang onto water weight.

While studies have proven that elevated levels of inflammation can cause weight gain, it’s also important to note that there are other genetic and lifestyle factors that can also contribute to it, too.

Not a fan of blueberries? Caspero says that a serving of tart cherries can also do the trick. Experts from Oregon Health and Science University say that they have the "highest anti-inflammatory content of any food" since they’re filled with anthocyanins, which are antioxidants with powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
