Get the most out of breakfast by choosing foods that will support your weight loss and fat burning efforts — and that means knowing which foods to avoid.

Some of the most popular classic breakfast foods aren’t as healthy as you might think. Including this one: the one breakfast food you should stop having because it makes it harder to lose stomach fat, according to nutritionists.

They’re soft, doughy, and delicious — but your average bagel is also one of the worst foods you can eat for weight loss.

A bagel is an example of a refined carb, which means it is made up almost entirely of carbohydrates, and much of its fiber, vitamin, and mineral content has been stripped from it.

And because it lacks fiber, you’ll digest your bagel much faster than other foods and it won’t keep you full and satisfied for as long.

The average bagel can have as much as 350 calories, with 50 to 60 grams of carbohydrates and little fiber, according to Health — and that’s as much as eating three to four slices of bread in one sitting.

The sugar in bagels spikes your blood sugar levels before sending you crashing and searching for more sugar a few hours later.

Worse still: the toppings we often add to our bagels to make them more yummy — like jelly and jam — are straight-up sugar.

Oatmeal is a better breakfast option and one that will fill you up and provide a ton of nutrients to give you energy. Unlike bagels, oats are unrefined carbs that are rich in protein, fiber, and B vitamins. Add nuts, seeds, and low-calorie fruits like berries to your oatmeal and you’ve just whipped up a healthy breakfast that will sustain you until lunch and help you burn fat and lose weight.
