Healthy skin is the result of a healthy lifestyle, which is why dermatologists recommend following a nutrient-rich diet filled with fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins to ensure that your skin gets the vitamins and minerals it needs.
But, there's one food that experts say that you should steer clear of for its ability to dry out the skin and make wrinkles more prominent--it's french fries!
Eating foods that are high in sodium and fat frequently can exacerbate certain skincare conditions and have a negative impact on your skin. That’s because of the drying effect the sodium has on the skin.
"Excess salt in the body draws more fluid out of the cells to help neutralize the salt and draw it out of the body,” Beth Warren, RD, told Bustle. “As a result, your skin gets drier because of the lack of fluid."
Dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe adds that wrinkles will appear deeper if your skin is dry and craving moisture.
“Dry skin results in more pronounced fine lines whereas hydrated skin appears plump and healthy,” she says.
Dr. Preeti Malladi of Malladi Bariatrics suggests opting for lean proteins that are high in omega-3 fatty acids to promote a younger-looking complexion, listing salmon as one of the best.
"Fresh salmon is an especially good choice because it contains an abundance of beneficial nutrients," he says. "Eating salmon for weight loss is especially effective if it is part of an overall healthy diet. This will include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other nutritious foods."
