You may think you're doing everything right when it comes to your skin — you never forget to remove your makeup at night, moisturize with essential oils, and have even invested in serums with peptides. Your goal when caring for your skin is probably to help it look as amazing as possible today, while also planning for its future. It's one thing to make peace with a few fine lines and the effects of gravity, but if you can slow down the aging process by being ultra diligent with your skincare, then by all means, it's worth a little extra effort!
But before you suspect you've got it all figured out, dermatologists would like you to remember there's one mistake a lot of us are making that is costing us beautiful, youthful-looking skin: we're not seeking professional help.
"The most common mistake that patients make that can contribute to aging is when women try to take their skincare in their own hands," says Dr. Jill Waibel, owner of the Miami Dermatology and Laser Institute. "It is recommended in your 20s and 30s to consult with you dermatologist to discuss a skincare regimen that will allow you to continue the young, healthy, glowing skin we all crave."
Before a problem gets out of control — take sunspots, for example — there are lasers and cutting-edge prescription ingredients that can be used on your skin now. Of course, you'll never know about them until you find yourself a dermatologist you trust.
And, of course, there are two more crucial tips Waibel says too many young people aren't following with vigor.
"Another mistake women tend to make that causes aging is not applying sunscreen when they were younger and abusing the sun," Waibel says. "The sun damage is actually what causes the unwanted wrinkles to form, the brown spots, and red spots to form. Lastly, another mistake is when women smoke — not only does smoking affect your organs, but it can ruin your skin in every aspect."
