Although adding a sweetener to your coffee is a common part of many people’s morning routines, it might be time to reevaluate. Coffee has the most health benefits when served without anything, and overloading your hot drink with sweeteners can detract from many of its healthy attributes.

Not all sweeteners are created equal, so before you put the sugar down for good, read on for the one type of sweetener you should definitely be avoiding!

Artificial Sweeteners

According to Bonnie Balk, registered dietitian and health & wellness Expert for Maple Holistics, you should definitely stay away from artificial sweeteners.

She explains, "Since the body cannot digest artificial sweeteners (such as sorbitol, sucralose, Acesulfame-K), they pass along the intestines and ferment there instead. This lack of digestion leads to increased gas, bloating, stomach pains, and diarrhea."

With that in mind, although you may think you are doing yourself a favor by staying away from sugar, the truth is not so clear cut.

Balk continues, "Many people believe they are 'eating healthy' when they opt for sugar-free foods, only to realize that they are loaded with artificial sweeteners. Although they add sweetness with minimal to no calories, their negative effects on your body might make you reconsider."

Staying away from these artificial sweeteners is an important component of establishing a healthier diet. Plus, there are so many alternatives.

Rather than loading your coffee up with artificial sweeteners, try adding some natural sweeteners instead.

Balk suggests, "If you still choose to have something sweet, go for products with small amounts of real sugars, such as honey, 100% maple syrup, or coconut sugar."
