Wrinkles, fine lines, and thinning hair are just all apart of getting older. Fun, isn’t it? You can use creams and serums to help disguise the signs of aging on your face, but hiding your thinning hair can prove to be a little bit more difficult. If anything, it’s comforting to know you’re not alone with this very common beauty issue. Even celebrities experience thinning hair as they get older.

Aside from taking hair supplements and avoiding heat styling whenever possible, there are ways to combat thin hair. We spoke with two stylists, Carolyn Aronson, CEO and Founder of It’s a 10 Haircare, and Franco Della Grazia, celebrity hairstylist and Keranique’s Global Brand Ambassador, for some expert advice.

In general, Aronson recommends shorter styles for people with thin hair.

“Fine hair can appear thicker with shorter styles such as blunt bobs,” she said. “These are great for those with thin or fine hair as the hair won’t get weighed down. Blunt ends make hair appear thicker!”

But if you’re afraid of cutting it all off in the name of thicker hair, Grazia went into a few other options.

“There many contributing factors for hair loss,” said Grazia. “Stress, aging, shrinking follicle, a dormant follicle, texture services -- like perming and coloring -- over processing, and heat appliances.”

With so many common causes to hair loss and thinning, it’s really no surprise that so many people struggle with it.

Since everyone’s individual case is unique, seeking an expert’s advice can really help determine the root (hair pun intended) of the issue.

“I like to determine the cause first, then a course of action. Does my client need the Keranique Hair Regrowth Treatment for Women, that will regrow hair or do we tackle the quality and structure of the hair.”

Regrowth treatments and products are often a good option to look into, but sometimes the right haircut will also do the trick--temporarily, of course.

“A good haircut is paramount when working with thin hair,” said Grazia. “It’s important to invest in the correct products, do not over product your hair, it will only weigh your hair down and attract dirt.”

The one style that people with thin hair should never get, contrary to popular belief, is too many layers. Most people think that layering their hair will give it more volume but that isn’t always the case.

“Do not over layer your hair, this will add to your hair separating and making it look thinner,” advises Grazia.

Aronson also recommends shorter styles for thin hair.

"Fine hair can appear thicker with shorter styles such as blunt bobs," said Aronson. "These are great for those with thin or fine hair as the hair won’t get weighed down. Blunt ends make hair appear thicker!"
