Many of us start our day in the shower. If the first thing you do after waking up is step into yours–there might be some key mistakes you’re making that are setting your whole day off on the wrong foot. We spoke with health experts to get the dish on the 4 shower habits most of us don’t know are actually ruining our day!
The number one habit: Neglecting the cold switch!
“Switching your water to cold for even just a few seconds can help boost your metabolism and increase energy throughout the day,” celebrity health expert Maggie Berghoff exclusively tells SheFinds. “It activates mitochondrial cells in the body (these are your energy storing-cells) which also helps to detoxify the body.”
And here are more unexpected tweaks you should make to your daily shower routine that could totally change the rest of your day (and not to mention your overall health & wellness!):
2. Having a shower that is too hot. "Warming the body temperature actually helps you sleep (it's recommended by doctor's to do this at night if you have problems falling asleep!)," Berghoff warns. "We want to wake up our bodies in the morning, not put them back to sleep."
Skin treatment expert Rene Serbon of Dermal Systems agrees. "Having a shower that is too hot can cause vaso-dilation (enlarge the capillaries in our faces). So if you don't want to show up red faced for that special date, meeting or interview it is best to dial that shower temperature down."
3. Using the wrong products. "Most mainstream brands of soaps, shampoos, and conditioners are filled with toxic chemicals, which can be cancer-causing and endocrine-disrupting. The skin, which is the largest organ of your body, actually drinks these chemicals right into your body within seconds!" Berghoff explains. "If you wouldn't eat it, don't put it on your body. Opt for a very simple, non-toxic substitute for these items, which can be found at your local health food grocery, or beauty counter."
Also, using the wrong cleanser can dehydrate the skin. "While a good quality cleanser will your skin clean, soft, supple and hydrated a bad quality one can do so much more than just 'dehydrate' the skin," Serbon tells us. "The wrong cleanser can leave you dry and in more severe cases aggravate conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Temperate showers are recommended for people suffering from these conditions and I always suggest moisturizing with a moisturizer that repairs the skin barrier."
4. Not dry brushing. "Try dry brushing before hopping into the shower," Berghoff advises. "Dry brushing not only exfoliates the skin, but it also will energize your body (try it--you won't turn back!). It increases lymphatic drainage, too, so if you woke up puffy, this is key to feeling and looking your best all day long!"
