The products you use in your skincare routine aren’t the only things that affect it. Research shows a strong correlation between diet and the overall health and appearance of the skin, proving that your complexion can benefit from eating more nutrient-rich foods and drinks. In fact, some studies even suggest that there’s one food, in particular, that can cause premature aging in the skin due to its high levels of sodium and fat–it’s french fries.
Eating foods that are high in sodium and fat frequently can exacerbate certain skincare conditions and have a negative impact on your skin. That’s because of the drying effect the sodium has on the skin. “Excess salt in the body draws more fluid out of the cells to help neutralize the salt and draw it out of the body,” Beth Warren, RD, told Bustle. “As a result, your skin gets drier because of the lack of fluid.” Dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe adds that wrinkles will appear deeper if your skin is dry and craving moisture. “Dry skin results in more pronounced fine lines whereas hydrated skin appears plump and healthy,” she says.
