As you grow older, it can be valuable to find a haircut and style that not only makes you feel confident, but also accentuates your best features so you can look great. Depending on your face shape and other factors some cuts may flatter your face more than others, and there are some trendy styles that may be worth avoiding because of the areas of the face they highlight.

Heading to the salon soon to get a new cut for the spring? There’s one style you may want to think twice about—but there are also ways to make it work so you can rock any look you desire at any age.

A Sharp, Jaw-Length Bob

Cuts that stop at the jawline become tricky as you grow older as this is often the area where your skin begins to sag and signs of aging will show. Wearing your hair at your jawline will often highlight any drooping skin in that area, making you look older than you are. “Bobs can be unflattering for people as they age because our skin tends to fall in these areas. The length and weight emphasize and frame these areas that have been affected by gravity,” explains expert hair stylist, Holly Dear.

While blunt cuts have become increasingly trendy in recent months, they may not be the most flattering in the pursuit of an anti-aging effect. However, that’s not to say that you can’t still rock a bob as you grow older, and it’s more about the details of the cut that determine how it will enhance your look.

“Bobs can be altered to be more flattering by wearing the bob with more length setting at the narrow part of the neck that helps visually lift and lengthen the neck and pull visually everything up,” notes Dear. Getting a slightly longer cut, or a “lob” will still satisfy your desire to make the chop, while doing more to mask sagging skin and enhance your ageless appearance.

Elle Westby, Co-Founder & Hairstylist of Gem House agrees, “A woman of any age can wear even the trendiest of haircuts as long as it is cut and shaped for her specific features. The number one rule; wear it with confidence.” It can feel limiting to be told that a cut is off-limits once you hit a certain age, so working with your stylist to tailor your desired look to best enhance and suit your features will make any trend accessible.

“Whenever you are following a trendy cut, make sure you are having it done by a stylist that will give you a proper consultation, taking into account facial features, and how you style your hair on a day to day basis,” adds Westby. “This way you can still have that up to date and trendy cut, done so in a way where it enhances your features and doesn’t just follow a cookie cutter trend, likely made for the youth.”

Bobs and lobs have become popular for a reason this season, and although they may take some extra consultation with your stylist, they can still work to look great on women of every age. Longer cuts can help to hide any sagging skin that may have developed over the years, but even so, as long as you rock your new style with confidence and feel great there’s really no limit to what you can try. Curtain bangs are great for framing the face, and paired with a bob or lob you can make this trend accessible and stylish at any age.
