Everyone knows that dark spots can be the result of excessive unprotected sun exposure, but not many are aware that they can also be caused by certain products. We did a little digging and found that there’s one product in particular that Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, says you should steer clear of because of its damaging effects to the skin–it’s gritty scrubs!
"They can be harsh on your skin," Dr. Zeichner tells Allure. "If you overuse them, they cause inflammation, and that increases melaninproduction—which makes existing spots worse and causes new ones."
Instead, it's recommended to use cleansers that contain glycolic acid, lactic acid, or salicylic acid as they are great for keeping pimples and eventual acne scars and hyperpigmentation at bay. Experts say it's best to cleanse twice a day to make sure that your skin is clean and your pores are clear--after all, clogged pores can lead to acne and hyperpigmentation!
