Avoid Processed Cheese
“Processed cheeses like American cheese are loaded with sodium and saturated fats, both of which can raise blood pressure levels and increase risk of stroke or heart attack,” Walker explains.
Unlike natural cheeses made with minimal ingredients, processed varieties are often manufactured using emulsifiers, preservatives, and added salts. This makes them ultra-smooth, long-lasting, and easy to melt—but not necessarily good for your body.
Walker also points out that saturated fats, which are found in high amounts in processed cheese, contribute to elevated LDL cholesterol levels—sometimes referred to as “bad” cholesterol.
“High cholesterol levels can also be a result of consuming too much processed cheese as they contain large amounts of cholesterol-raising saturated fats,” she says.
Over time, elevated cholesterol can lead to the buildup of plaque in your arteries—a condition known as atherosclerosis—which raises the risk for heart attack and stroke.
And the damage doesn’t stop there. “High levels of fat and calories,” Walker adds, “can lead to weight gain, which is another risk factor for heart disease.” Combined with the high sodium content—which is added to preserve flavor and extend shelf life—processed cheese can contribute to a perfect storm of health risks if eaten in excess.
The Bottom Line
While indulging in the occasional grilled cheese isn’t likely to derail your health, regularly consuming processed cheese slices may raise your risk for heart disease over time. Instead, consider swapping in natural cheeses like mozzarella or Swiss, which tend to be lower in sodium and made with fewer additives.
Your heart—and your arteries—will thank you.
