Designers Clamor To Dress Plus-Size Gabby Sidibe For the Oscars, And Curvy Dresses You Can Wear Now

With 10 days to go until the Oscars, Precious star and best actress nominee Gabourey Sidibe had to fend off designers clamoring to dress her. We wonder if they’ve seen Italy’s Vogue Curvy. According to her stylist in US Weekly, a bevy of big name designers came knocking, and in the end, Marchesa won out. (Which is interesting, considering the brand is known  for dressing skinny minnies like Anne Hathaway and Miley Cyrus). It’s good to know that designers are embracing a body type that doesn’t fit the Hollywood mold, but curvier gals have long been doing the red carpet right. Here are our favorite four shapely stars in dresses that do wonders for their bodies, and affordable (all under $200) alternatives you can buy now.

Let’s face it: Kim Kardashian wouldn’t be famous without that body.  One shoulder dresses are on trend, and this JS Boutique One Shoulder Chiffon Gown ($170) is almost identical to the dress Kim wore for The American Heart Association’s Hearts Truth Red dress collection. The asymmetrical neckline flatters bustier women, and the empire waist is slimming. Chiffon-like fabric is also a good choice because it glides over the body.

Beyonce created the term “bootiylicious” and she wears clothes that show off her body, but in a tasteful way. The strapless gown that she is wearing comes in at her waist, the smallest part of her body, and the origami like details on the bodice create a good proportion to her hips. This Alexia Admor taffeta strapless tulip dress ($129) mimics the shape of Beyonce’s dress, and shows that it is okay to go fuller in the skirt if you have a booty.

Gabby Sidibe proves that you don’t have to look dowdy if you are beyond a size 10. The v-neck on this navy dress elongates her torso, and the jewel brooch at her waist draws attention to the center of her body which has a slimming effect. This BCBG Max Azria jersey dress ($127) works the same magic. The above the knee length on both of the dresses makes them more youthful, and shows that showing off skin is good for all shapes and sizes.

Christina Hendricks of Mad Men is a modern day Bettie Paige and her outfit choices always properly feature her best assets. The deep v-neck opens up her chest, while the tied waist and high slit add sex appeal. This ABS Twisted Strap Maxi Dress ($102.35) has the same qualities. The rouching and sash on the bodice is slimming, and the hem on the maxi dress hits perfectly right above the ankle.
