When it comes to holiday parties this year, the dress is definitively out. In it’s place are sequined pants, leather anything and full skirts perfect for pairing with anything cropped. But, it’s holiday season after all and there’s nothing like going a bit girly and getting extra festive (sans the androgyny). So, of the three holiday party-wear trends this year, we’re going with the full skirt option because it’s the biggest, the most eye-catching and, honestly, the easiest transition into next year. Here’s how:
Pair it with your favorite tee. Weather you opt for a black, matte version or a sparkly, tulle type, let a big skirt take center stage of your ensemble. Better yet, you don’t have to be any less comfortable for the wear. Grab your favorite tee (make it a graphic one, even) and tuck it into the waist of the skirt. The tee will lessen the fancy feel and make an eye-catching skirt wearable to the office before the party that night. Add a skinny belt to draw the eye to your waist, and now the big skirt has more slimming magic than the traditional LBD. It’s a win/win.
Finally get use out of your cropped sweaters. Cropped sweaters have been everything this season, but high-waist jeans are hardly anywhere to be found. Wearing a cropped top with leggings? Come on. We know better than to wear leggings with anything that doesn’t cover the bum. So what do you pair those belly-button skimming sweaters with before its too warm to be able to wear them? The big skirt. Pull the waist of the skirt up a few centimeters under the cropped top, and now, even when your doing the YMCA, you’ll be office holiday party appropriate.
Play into the fancy vibe. Remember when getting really dressed up to go out was a thing? No, not with your newest NastyGal purchase, but with that really nice mink your grandmother left you or that emerald ring your mom is letting you borrow. OK–so years of a recession economy have made dolling up on the regular a thing of the past (and it’s likely few of us have ever actually done it outside of senior prom). But you’ve seen Sex and the City and you know what dressing to the Ts means. And a big skirt is your chance. Pair on the big jewels, grab yourself a cropped, sequined tee and throw on your highest stilettos. Ring in the holiday season with some much needed grandeur.
