With the nail art craze in full swing —from DIY nail polish on Pinterest and Instagram to the never-ending new nail color launches (have you seen 3-D yet?) & nail art collaborations (ahem, Thakoon x Nars!) –I thought I’d try my hand, literally, at a few of the more out-there efforts one recent Sunday afternoon.
It didn’t go so well.
When the UK’s most popular nail polish (so much so it had a wait list) Ciate Nail Caviar, a $25 kit with microbeads hit Sephora, we watched it sell out in minutes online, before I could get my credit card out of my bag. I made the remark that there must be a cheaper way to create a similar look at home. Famous last words. I was then slapped with the weekend assignment to give this a go, and I was pretty confident, being somewhat of a crafter if I do say so myself, that my results would impress.

A lot of Facebook followers have given us some other helpful tips — from microbead to sand, but take it from me, here’s one time when the real thing beats all DIY versions. I’ll definitely pony up the $25 for the next shipment if it ever hits Sephora. Leave any of your own tips in the comments!
