In honor of National Chocolate Day coming up (Wednesday, October 28th and unofficially October 31st), we’re cracking down on the myth that chocolate makes you break out. Because, girl’s gotta celebrate the most important holiday of the year, right?
According to Dr. Shamban, a dermatologist who was interviewed for The Huffington Post, it isn’t chocolate that’s causing our breakouts (thankfully!). Dr. Shamban says, “In fact, there is little evidence that chocolate or any specific fatty foods will cause acne, but we do know that a high-sugar/high-fat diet can increase sebum production and promote inflammatory responses in the body — which can lead to acne.”
So it’s not necessarily chocolate that is the problem here, it’s just about the amount of high-sugars and high-fats that are a part of our diets. If we can monitor our intake of these types of foods when possible (aka, NOT National Chocolate Day), we don’t have to point fingers about what is causing our breakouts anymore. And we won’t have to feel guilty about eating chocolate! Sounds like a win-win, right?
