Why: I know we have posted about these kinds of bags once or twice before, but this is seriously the ultimate sustainable shopping tote. I had bought a few of the original nylon “EarthTotes” a while back because they are very durable and they look and function exactly like grocery store brown paper bags (which are not so easy to find anymore, let me tell you). Each one of these bags stands on its own so you can easily pack groceries — it's not your average flimsy bag that requires you hold it open with one hand, while awkwardly organizing your food with the other. Once you're all packed up, it easily folds just like a regular shopping bag.
The originals are great and considered sustainable, of course, because using them can prevent literally thousands of throwaway bags from being used (and they are made with fair labor and wages unlike old “I’m Not a Plastic Bag”). But now ReusableBags.com has a new line of them made from 95% recycled content such as plastic bottles and containers. Don’t ask me how they do it but by some scientific stroke of genius, manufacturing the fabric for just one of these bags, (called PET fabric), actually saves ten plastic bottles from accumulating in our landfills. Not only that, but they are conveniently machine washable, and 1% of all sales goes to support the environment. I really don’t see how you could go wrong here.
