Everything You Need To Know About Chia Seeds According To Janie Hoffman Of Mamma Chia

Feeling a little unsure about how to start incorporating the superfood into your diet? Relax. We got the deets on chia seeds from Janie Hoffman, founder of Mamma Chia and author of The Chia Cookbook, below.

SHEfinds: What inspired you to start Mamma Chia?

Janie Hoffman: It has been my mission to share the magic of chia with the world ever since these tiny little seeds changed my life. I suffered from debilitating autoimmune disorders for almost 20 years, but once I was introduced to chia and switched to an organic diet I finally went into complete remission. Knowing that chia had such a huge impact for me, I started experimenting in my kitchen with lots of different ways to enjoy chia, and incorporating chia into just about everything I served. Family and friends had such a positive response that I knew I was on to something. Their enthusiastic feedback coupled with the transformation of my own health helped me realize my soul’s purpose. And I have been on a journey to share the magic of chia with the world and create a brand that would uplift and honor the soul of humanity and our planet ever since.

SF: Can you tell us about chia? Where does it come from and what are the health benefits?

JH: Hands down, chia is one of the most nutrient-rich foods on the planet. Those tiny seeds are packed with omega-3s, fiber, protein, calcium, iron and more. Chia seeds have 70 percent more protein than soybeans, 25 percent more fiber than flaxseed, 600 percent more calcium than milk, 200 percent more potassium than a banana, and 30 percent more antioxidants than blueberries. They truly deserve their “superfood” status. Chia grows best in tropical or subtropical climates, so primarily Mexico, Central and South America.

SF: Where do you get inspiration for the Mamma Chia products?

A few of my favorites from my cookbook, The Chia Cookbook, include the Creamy Chia Coconut Ginger-Carrot Soup, Linguine Al Limone with Grilled Chia-Chicken Meatballs and Key Lime Chia Cheesecake.

SF: Why is chia a better snacking option than other things on the market?
