Everything You Need To Know About Curling Your Hair In 4 Video Tutorials

February 16, 2015 by Sara Steinfeld

We’re seeing curls everywhere as of late, and it’s no real surprise. They’re the best style for just about any hair texture or thickness, they hold up well in any climate and they work for a casual daytime look as well as a night out. It takes some practice to get curls just right, but once you’ve mastered the technique, it’s easy to do. It’s curling the back of your hair that can get a bit tricky, for obvious reasons (the foremost of which is that you can’t see the back of your head). Here’s the thing about curling your hair, though: you can research every tip, trick and hack in the book, and some of them might even work for you, but the best results come from standard curling irons and rollers. You know, the OG methods.

I know, I know, that isn’t necessarily what you wanted to read, but hear me out. I’m a huge proponent of using YouTube tutorials to learn how to properly do hair and makeup. It’s the only learning tool that’s really ever worked for me. Anyone who’s had nights where they can’t sleep can attest to the fact that if you want to learn something, anything, all you need to do is type your query into the YouTube search bar. Curling hair is no exception. To save you search time, we’ve gathered the best YouTube videos for every type of curl. Consider us thanked:

1. Loose waves

Say what you will about Lauren Conrad, but her hair and makeup are consistently perfect. Her tutorials are always really easy to follow, and this is the one I used to learn how to create loose waves for everyday wear.

2. Curling the back of your hair

This is actually a really great general curling tutorial if you’ve got ten minutes to kill, but if you just want to see how to curl the back of your hair using a curling iron, skip ahead to the 5:50 mark.

3. Thick, old-school Taylor Swift curls

Remember the good ol’ days when T-Swift had her adorable curly hair? Here’s how to get that look.

4. Curling with rollers

They’re not just for your grandma. Seriously, rollers are the best. Keep in mind that, depending on how big your rollers are and how thick your hair is, sometimes these are just better for adding volume to your hair than an actual curl.
