Makeup artist and beauty entrepreneur Jeffree Star wanted to love Kylie Jenner’s insanely popular lip kits as much as the rest of us, but the beauty vlogger values honesty (and a killer product) above all else. After receiving his Kylie lip glosses, Star used the power of his voice and impressive social media following (2.2 million Instagram followers, more than 530,000 Twitter followers and more than 1 million YouTube subscribers) to call out the youngest member of the Jenner/Kardashian family on an unacceptable product flaw: it turns out her original applicator was a royal mess.

Star began receiving a litany of responses from disgruntled customers who were disappointed with their own Kylie Jenner glosses and the way their applicators split. Insisting he has no “beef” with Jenner, the beauty enthusiast proved his love of makeup was at the center of his complaints by pushing for better quality control. To her credit, Jenner took Star’s criticism well and has since announced the next wave of products will come with a higher quality applicator.
Mission accomplished–but now it’s time to learn more about Star and why he is one of the leading beauty authorities on planet Earth.
Star, 30, hails from Orange County, California, and has an impressive resume that includes singer-songwriter, fashion designer, model, and celebrity makeup artist. He became interested in makeup as a child and accompanied his model mom on photo shoots, where he learned makeup tricks from pros. Born Jeffrey Lynn Steininger, he seems to have enjoyed a childhood filled with opportunities to explore androgyny and beauty on his own terms. It certainly doesn’t hurt that his mom reportedly let him wear makeup in junior high and that he immediately slayed at applying it while the rest of us were trying to figure out how not to poke out our eyes with eyeliner.
Star’s uniquely glam look, talent and personality led to MySpace fame, collaborations with artists like Nicki Minaj and electronic band Breathe Carolina, and even an appearance in Ke$ha’s Take It Off music video. But it’s his makeup line, which he started in 2014, that is going to make him a household name.
Jeffree Star Cosmetics currently features two products: Velour Liquid Lipstick and Velour Lip Scrub. All of his products are vegan, 100% cruelty-free and free of parabens and gluten. Because we can’t get enough of matte lipsticks that go on like silk and stay put for hours, Star treats us to a collection of insanely gorgeous, can’t-find-hues-like-these-anywhere shades that include sold-out stand-outs Anna Nicole (a delightfully bright orange-red), Gemini (a terra-cotta warm-toned nude), and Scorpio (a lethal grey-purple).
The most exciting thing about following Star is that he is constantly evolving as an artist and his business is a work in progress that is buzz-buzzing away. He is about to launch an eyeshadow palette, highlighter, and metallic lip glosses inspired by shades he says his mom wore in the ’90s.
You’ve just met your new, refreshingly honest BFF–one who just happens to be a magician when it comes to creating beautiful lip colors.
