Sleep is so vital to our overall well being (just ask Ariana Huffington!), and it’s one of the most important aspects, along with eating and breathing, that can determine whether we are happy or sad, healthy or sick, at peace or unease. It’s worth spending time thinking about the most optimal sleeping situations–from what you should wear to bed, how you should do your hair, to what you should eat and drink before, and of course, what time you should set your alarm for, whether you should hit snooze–and of course, what time to go to bed.

Well, it turns out you don’t have to guess when it comes to what time you should go to bed. Scientists have actually narrowed it down to specific time that is universally best for everyone. Want to know what it is? It’s right before 10pm.
For starters, experts agree that there is no benefit to keeping yourself up late–as soon as the sun goes down and you start to feel tired, you should put yourself to bed. After 9pm, the body temperature and cortisol levels start to drop. Cortisol is relevant because it’s the hormone that helps us cope with stress. For this reason, staying up past 9pm only makes us more prone to anxious thoughts–which, everyone knows are a recipe for a sleepless night!
