Fashion Debate: Are "It" Bags Gone For Good?

When I read this little piece on NYMag.com, I almost flipped. “It” bags — okay, I can do without. But cupcakes? They never go out of style!

Before you think I’ve totally lost it and have my priorities all mixed up, allow me to explain. You see, I was never really a fan of the so-called “It” bags because they always seemed to eclipse the other styles in the collection, not to mention the other designers whose bags were totally worth splurging on but didn’t have any official/unofficial celeb seal of approval. Please don’t misunderstand me — I’m in no way saying that the Fendi “Spy” bag or the YSL “Muse” were unworthy recipients of “It” bag status, but how many people missed out on other amazing purse purchases because they were consumed with carrying the same bag as [insert celerity name here].

Like I said, I won’t really mourn the fall of “It” bags. For one, I’m not totally convinced they’re gone for good, but I also think it’s about darn time to start sharing the spotlight. So who, you may ask, are these designers whose bags you should look out for. Well, Hayden Hartnett for one. This Brooklyn-based company makes amazingly soft (you really do have to feel them) leather bags that are innovative and (relatively, remember we’re talking “It” bags here) inexpensive. Rebecca Minkoff is another personal fave. Her styles are luxe, but totally wearable. And if money’s not a concern, an Anya Hindmarch is an investment. It really doesn’t get much more glamorous than this.

Back to the cupcakes, though, if you really think their death has arrived, please go wherever you need to go to get your hands on a red velvet one. As they say, the proof is in the pudding…and cake batter, pudding, it’s all the same thing.
